September is National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month

September 15 through October 15, 2021 is National Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, paying tribute to Hispanic and Latinx Americans of the Glendale community in a celebration of history and culture and in recognition of the community’s struggle for inclusion and equity.

In honor of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos September 15 - October 15 & November 1-7, and as part of the Be the Change series, the library is hosting programming for children, and more. The below programs are generously sponsored by the City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the City of Glendale Urban Art Fund.

GUSD ¡Adelante, Latinos! Hispanic Heritage Month 2nd Annual Speaker Series

  • September 15 - October 15

    Join GUSD for their 2nd annual speaker series with five weeks of learning from renowned Latinx professionals who serve their communities in different ways. The theme for the 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month is: Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope. We encourage students grades 7-12 to participate in these webinars to learn and enhance their understanding of Hispanic Heritage.

Programming for Children

  • MOLAS IN PANAMA & COLOMBIA

    Join us for a Live Virtual Workshop on Zoom Saturday, September 11 and 25, 4:00-5:30 pm for children ages 8-12. Let's chat about the Molas in Colombia and Panama and create a needlework project by making a simple and colorful form of the sun. Materials included with registration: Precut quilting fabric bundle 5" charm squares in white, red, and yellow or orange color; red thread.   • LET'S PLAY LOTERÍA / JUGUEMOS LOTERÍA BILINGUAL VIRTUAL GAME

    Join us for a Live Virtual Even on Zoom Friday, Sept 17 and Oct 15 4:00 - 5:00 pm for families and children ages 5 and up. Lotería is a popular Mexican game very similar to bingo, but it uses images on a pack of cards instead of numbers. Each participant will get a virtual card to play via Zoom once registered.   • SUGAR SKULL DECORATING WORKSHOP

    Join us for a Live Virtual Even on Zoom Friday, October 29 4:00 - 5:00 pm. On the Day of the Dead sugar skulls are very popular. Sugar skulls are a very important element for the Day of the Dead altars. Join this class to decorate your own sugar skull for your own altar. Materials included with registration: One sugar skull as well as icing, in four colors, to decorate it.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS

  • Day of the Dead or Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated in different parts of the world on November 1st and 2nd. Dia de Los Muertos is a colorful celebration of life that reunites the living and the dead. Families build ofrendas to honor and welcome their beloved departed family members. The City of Glendale celebrates Dia de Los Muertos every year since 2017. This year, the celebration will take place at the Glendale Central Library on November 6, from 3-7pm. We hope to see you at the library!
