Day of the Dead or Día de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated in different parts of the world on November 1st and 2nd. Día de Los Muertos is a colorful celebration of life that reunites the living and the dead. Families build ofrendas to honor and welcome their beloved departed family members.  

The City of Glendale celebrates Dia de Los Muertos every year since 2017. This year, the celebration will take place at the Glendale Central Library on Saturday November 5, from 3-7pm. 

Participate in the community altar by bringing your offerings to the Central Library from November 1 - November 4, 2022. For questions about the altar offerings, please contact Guillermo Garcia via email at jugarcia@glendaleca.gov

SUGAR SKULL DECORATING WORKSHOP

Sugar skulls are a very important element for the Day of the Dead altars. Join this class to decorate your own sugar skull with icing and sequins for your own altar.

Materials included with registration:
One sugar skull as well as icing, in four colors, to decorate it.

Alebrijes are colorful imaginary creatures created from different parts of various animals, you may have seen them in the movie Coco. This folk art originated around the 1930s by an artisan named Pedro Linares. Use your imagination to create colorful imaginary creatures.

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos in style by creating alebrijes to decorate your space.

AGES: families, children ages 5-12 years and up.

Supplies will be provided. Drop in while supplies last.

Shany is a Salvadorean and Guatemalan lifestyle and beauty influencer, content creator, actress and singer based in California. Her content is based on beauty, skincare, and fashion and how to express yourself in those ways.

Andrea was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She has an EdS in reading education and works as a public school ESOL teacher by day and as a writer by night. Andrea balances her life in Virginia with trips home to see her family and eat lots of tostones de pana. When she’s not busy, you can always find her enjoying nature in the nearest forest or body of water. Iveliz Explains It All is her debut novel.

Crystal Maldonado is a young adult author with a lot of feelings. Her debut novel, Fat Chance, Charlie Vega, is a 2021 New England Book Award winner, a Cosmopolitan Best New Book, and a POPSUGAR Best New YA Novel. Her next novel, No Filter and Other Lies, explores teenage life in the social media age—and the lies we tell ourselves and others. By day, Crystal works in higher ed marketing, and by night, a writer who loves Beyoncé, shopping, spending too much time on her phone, and being extra. Her work has also been published in Latina, BuzzFeed, and the Hartford Courant. She lives in western Massachusetts with her husband, daughter, and dog.

Join GUSD for their 3rd annual speaker series with five weeks of learning from renowned Latinx professionals who serve their communities in different ways. The theme for the 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month is: Unidos Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation. We encourage students grades 7-12 to participate in these webinars to learn and enhance their understanding of Hispanic Heritage.

Riverside Art Museum- The Cheech  

The Cheech is a “center of Chicano art, not only for painting, but for sculpture, photography, and video arts.” The 61,420-square-foot center will house hundreds of paintings, drawings, photographs, and sculptures by artists including Patssi Valdez, Sandy Rodriguez, Carlos Almaraz, Frank Romero, and Gilbert “Magú” Luján.
