English Conversation Lounge

Meet-ups and clubs are a great way to step outside of your comfort zone, meet new people, and develop new skills and hobbies. The Literacy Center has recently launched a new and ongoing English Conversation Lounge at the Central Library, which does not require registration and allows for students to come and go as they please.

The Conversation lounge is a great way for a student to practice their English language skills in a casual, fun, and low-pressure environment. Coffee and light refreshments are provided, as well as a robust selection of games and activities. One of the more popular activities at the lounge are the Conversation Cards. These cards allow students to pair up in small or large groups and ask each other an array of unique and entertaining questions.

The lounge does not have an instructor, instead it intended to be student led. The students are the ones who dictate which activities they want to partake in and with whom. There is of course Literacy staff on hand ready to help and be of assistance when needed. The English Conversation Lounge officially began on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Julie, a Librarian at the Central Library who organizes the lounge, noted that the informal atmosphere of this program allowed for students to interact and speak to one another with ease.

The Glendale Library, Arts & Culture Literacy Center serves the literacy needs of the Glendale business and residential community. Our programs are free and address the English literary needs of adults ages eighteen and over. The Adult Literacy program is partially funded through the California Library Literacy Services, which is a program of the California State Library. The ESL program is fully funded through the California Library Literacy Services, which is a program of the California State Library.
