Celebrate Lunar New Year!

A Be the Change program

To kick off 2022, as part of the library’s Be the Change initiative, we’d like to celebrate the Lunar New Year with you! Lunar New Year is celebrated by many East Asian countries following the lunisolar calendar or cycles of the moon and sun. This year it falls on Tuesday, February 1.

Some countries that celebrate Lunar New Year are China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, and Vietnam; each country has various traditions that range from playing games, wearing traditional clothing, to preparing time honored feasts and decorations.

The library’s Be the Change initiative seeks to draw awareness to and build a collective understanding of cultures that have historically been marginalized.

….All in This Tea

To celebrate the Lunar New Year, we’d like to focus on tea. Drinking tea is a way of life, not just in East Asia, but throughout the world, and its historical influence and global impact on the fabric of communities cannot be understated.

To highlight this, join us for a special showing of the documentary ‘…All in This Tea’ by distinguished documentarian Les Blank. Start streaming from the library’s website from Friday, January 28. To register to see the documentary (starting January 28) or for more information, please head to the event page.

In addition, tea kits will be made available from each Glendale Library branch from Monday, January 24. Please enjoy a sample of Oolong tea, a traditional Chinese tea that, in addition to caffeine, contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and beneficial tea polyphenol antioxidants. Tea kits are first come, first served.
